What Is Your Pelvic Floor And Why Is It So Important To Go To Physical Therapy Specialist?
The pelvic floor plays a role in the following:
- bowel movement,
- jumping and
- all other forms of exercise.
The pelvic floor supports your organs and is made up of a group of muscles that are formed like a basin that hold and protect your uterus, bladder and rectum.
They are also important for stabilization with activities like standing, walking, jumping, running and more.
What Types of Symptoms Do Pelvic Floor Problems Cause?
Some symptoms you may experience that can be affected by the pelvic floor include:
- vulvar, vaginal, clitoral, perineal or anal pain;
- pain during or post sexual intercourse;
- interlabial, vulvar or genital itching;
- painful urination, urinary hesitancy, urgency or frequency;
- abdominal and groin pain;
- sacroiliac joint pain / instability;
- painful periods;
- pain with sitting or exercise.
The symptoms you may experience as mentioned above can occur due to pelvic floor muscles that are too tight or spasm, inflamed pelvic floor nerves and restricted connective tissue. When there is a restriction in blood flow to your muscles, there is limited oxygen as well which can cause your pain.
When the pelvic floor muscles are relaxed and healthy, the pelvic floor can allow urine to exit, penetration, better bowel movements, improved pelvic floor muscle contraction with exercising, muscle downtime and improved blood flow.
What to expect at your first session?
During the physical therapy evaluation for the problems you have reported, an external assessment of your low back, hips, and pelvic girdle will be performed by a physical therapist in order to identify any musculoskeletal, biomechanical and postural problems.
Following the external examination, an internal assessment, with patient consent, may be performed to assess the pelvic floor internally for muscular function and can be used for treatment techniques.
This assessment is performed by observing and/or palpating the perineal region including the vulva and vagina.
This evaluation will assess:
- skin condition,
- muscle tone,
- strength and endurance,
- scar mobility and
- function of the pelvic floor region.
The findings will be discussed with you and you will work with your physical therapist to develop a treatment plan that is appropriate for you.
We Always Work to Achieve Your Pelvic Health Treatment Goals
Goals will be discussed, broken down to short and long term goals to help keep you on track on attaining your ultimate goal.
Following the initial evaluation, follow up treatment sessions may include, but is not limited to:
- internal and/or external manual muscle release techniques,
- postural corrections,
- breathing/relaxation exercises,
- muscular education and coordination with activities,
- biofeedback treatment may also be part of your program.
